Six more NSW banana growers have been identified as illegally selling bananas in Melbourne's wholesale markets, bringing the total number of growers caught to 16.This is in addition to those growers from the Coffs Harbour and Woolgoolga area, as well as some near Tweed Heads, who were found to have breached interstate trade regulations designed to protect Victoria from fruit fly.
Geoffrey Jackson from the Victorian Department of Primary Industries said he has not seen a banana bust of this scale in years. More growers are expected to be caught as investigations continue.
